As part of the hydrogen Germany tour organized by Toyota Motor Europe NV / SA, the Mirai team visited the Institute of Technical Thermodynamics at the German Aerospace Center. At the Stuttgart location, the enthusiasm of the approximately 40 traveling journalists was clearly felt when they presented the capabilities of the new drive technology, not only on the ground, but also in new aviation applications.
Emission-free drives are already familiar to anyone in terrestrial short-distance traffic. But in order to increase the acceptance of the population, other technologies must be developed to bridge even the longer distances. This gap is closed by hydrogen in combination with fuel cell technology. With the vehicle Mirai, Toyota presents an application that is already produced in small series. With a range of 500km and a refueling time of 3 minutes, the concept shows that even high ranges can be covered without emissions. However, hydrogen fuel cell technology is also suitable for aerospace applications. The Hy4 of the H2Fly GmbH shows that it is possible to transport 4 passengers in the aircraft quiet, traffic and emission-free over longer distances. “With hydrogen / fuel cell technology, we now have the opportunity to become independent of fossil fuels and to operate the short-haul routes with emission-free aircraft up to approx. 1000km. Hydrogen is the fuel of the future and is available indefinitely. It`s the key ftechnologie for emission-free passenger flights, “Thomas Stephan, Managing Director of H2fly GmbH, explains the future potential of the Hy4. Prof. Josef Kallo, Head of the Institute for Energy Conversion and Storage at the University of Ulm and Coordinator for Electric Aircraft Activities at the German Aerospace Center also dares to look into the future. “Even internationally, the hybrid technology of hydrogen fuel cells and batteries will continue to prevail. Conceivable are planes with up to 40 passengers and a range of 2000km at 500km / h. Here we are setting main points with the operation of the technology in the aircraft. I am convinced that hydrogen technology will secure future competitive advantages for Germany as a location and strengthen our position in the international market. “All parties involved are obviously fully aware of the pioneering features of the Aware of hydrogen technology and hope that with this successful meeting of two pioneering applications, it has been shown that it is possible to meet the requirements of future passenger transport in a sustainable, quiet and emission-free manner.
